QUIZZES

Quiz one:  OK, we can all answer this correctly if we take the time to look it up, but just to get an idea of how many people get this right on the spur of the moment, submit an answer WITHOUT picking up a book.  Feel free to leave "submitted by" blank.   If you want to come back with an answer and reference, then fine and you can fill in submitted by, but just for fun, let's first pretend it's live on the field conditions and see what the ratio of umps getting it right the first time is...

Situation:  Runner on second, one out.  Umpire in the "C" slot in front of all infielders.  Hard hit ground ball hits the ump in the leg before he can move and before the ball reaches any infielder.  You call:

A.  Nothing--ball is live and play continues.

B.  Dead ball--batter is out, runner remains on second.

C. Dead Ball--batter gets first, runner stays on second.

D.  Dead ball--batter gets first, runner on second gets third.

ANSWER TO QUIZ ONE:  Per rule 5.09f and 6.08d of the OBR, the ball is dead, the batter gets first base, and runners who are forced advance.  Thus, in the quiz, the batter is awarded first and the runner stays at second.
